Phil Major

So during these past few days, having enjoyed my time involved in much Halloween celebrating, have decided to allow, occasionally, Phil Major to post on my blog as a guest. Phil and I are very close. He just might be a little shy and hasn't wanted to invest time in his own blog. He has promised that the post will be about me or about my life in some way. He will try not to deviate to far from the normal format however it will be a new voice to enjoy. I first want to thank the Gimbel's for the introduction. We'll see how is goes. This might not last o long. Phil keep it together and keep it fun. Phil will be introducing himself in his first post to give you some personal background. Enjoy!

Your Mom's a Jailbird

I love how “The Church” allows you to serve others. I was asked by the Relief Society president if I would be willing to meet with a lady, that is less active… oh let’s face it inactive but starting to come back, and Notarize some documents. I happen to be a Notary public along with all my Insurance Licensing. So I said yes and she gives me the address. Then she explains that the woman is now living in the County Jail awaiting trial on a DUI charge. Well being that I am in insurance I have dealt with a few DUI cases in my day. I am thinking that is pretty harsh for a DUI. It turns out that it is her third DUI in 18 months. Holy Crap! Right? She is forced to sell her home to and pay other bills because she no longer gets a steady income that can support her life while she is behind bars. Well actually up at County they have metal doors with windows in them and there are really no bars. So, behind bars in this case is in line with common nomenclature and not the reality of the situation she was in. She had to sign a power of attorney in order for her boyfriend to get the info he needed and the power he needed to sell the home for her. It was a crazy situation for her.
Well I went in there to meet this lady that had a bunch of DUI’s and an obvious drinking problem. I wasn’t sure what to expect at this point. I was thinking white trash lady looking CharlizeTheron in that movie “Monster”. I was shocked when I met her. She was the Vice principle of a private school in a town close to Aptos when she was taken into custody. She had gone to court about 60 days prior to plead on her case during her lunch break. She was then held in custody pending her trial, which was scheduled for next week sometime. So needless to say she lost her job. She expects to be in custody for up to another 18 months. What was crazy is she was so smart and educated but has this alcohol problem. I went in expecting white trash and ended up sitting in the principal’s office. It also totally reinforced that I don’t ever want to drink and especially drink and drive. It was also the first time I had to do a notary through a little slot in bullet proof glass. I ended up talking to her for about an hour and a half. I told her there were people out there who cared and loved her. I also got a chance to share my testimony to her. I hope she felt encouraged and supported. It was the least I could do for her on her birthday.
